Devotion: Joel2:21

July 10, 2024

Joel 2:21 Do not be afraid, land of Judah; be glad and rejoice. Surely the Lord has done great things!

Joel is not one of the books we are used to reading. But it is important to remember, all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching (1 Timothy 3:16). So let’s dig into Joel and see what nuggets of truth we can glean from this verse.

The book of Joel is mostly about a locust plague that devastated the land of Judah. As with many times or trials we are called to repent, turn away from sin in order to be restored. And that is what Joel is telling the people of Judah as they suffer the results of these destructive bugs.

But though there was destruction and a call to repentance, there’s also hope. Joel 2:21 shows us that there’s no need to fear. Instead be glad and rejoice because God is faithful. He will redeem us if we turn to Him. True there are consequences to human behavior, but God doesn’t want any to perish but all to be redeemed (2 Peter 3:9).

While this verse and the immediate ones following it are written about the land and animals, the overall message is clear. God has a plan and we have nothing to fear if we turn to Him. He does good things. He loves us and wants what’s best for us. But we have to do our part and turn to Him.

Are you walking a path that leads to destruction? Or are you ready to repent and be restored? Today is the day. Do not fear – be glad and rejoice. Restoration is waiting for each of us if we are ready to repent.
