Proverbs 15:33 Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor.
We learned in Proverbs 1:7 that through reverence to the Lord we gain wisdom. We must humble ourselves before Him and give Him the honor and praise He deserves before we can ever expect to receive honor and wisdom from Him. We cannot be arrogant or haughty and expect Him to bless us. We must fear the Lord and show Him respect and reverence.
In Luke 18:14 we see that “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 18:14 ESV) Jesus humbled Himself by becoming a man. He humbled Himself through His death on the cross (Philippians 2:7-8). If He can humble Himself on our behalf, shouldn’t we be able to humble ourselves for Him?
One commentary that I read stated it this way: “There is a direct connection between humility and the attainment of honor, suggesting that those who embrace a humble disposition open themselves to greater wisdom and respect. In acknowledging their limitations and the authority of God, individuals position themselves for divine blessing.” (Source: TheBibleSays.com) Honor cannot be pursued and gained directly. It comes to us as the result of a humble heart that seeks God and honors Him.
As we approach the end of the month and conclude our study of wisdom, we have come full circle back to humbly submitting to our Lord and showing reverence. And we do this out of our love for God, not in hopes of gaining something in return.
