Devotion: Romans 12:12

January 24, 2025

Romans 12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

If you are a reader of these devotions, you will recognize this verse from previous months. We have covered it before. But that is the beauty of the Scriptures. They apply in different ways, at different times, always meeting our needs as they present themselves. Today we look at this verse and explore the joy in it.

Romans 12:12 is a verse that shows us ways that we can respond to various situations. I love the fact that joy is one of the first responses it gives us. We are to be joyful in hope. Hope for the future, hope for today, hope for tomorrow. Hope for eternity (Titus 3:7). And our hope not only is something we feel, that we experience, but it comes from Him (Psalm 62:5).

Our hope for the future and what is yet to come should bring us joy. We look forward with an attitude of joy and expectation, knowing that He is faithful to bless us and keep His promise. Abraham trusted in God’s promises and continued to hope as he waited to become the father of many nations (Romans 4:18).

There are countless Scriptures that show us the hope that people had as they waited on God. They not only had hope, but experienced joy in the waiting, knowing that He would respond and provide. And that is the same hope we should have. We should be filled with joyful hope for what is to come because we know He is going to bless us.

Put your hope in God and what is yet to come and be filled with His glorious joy.
