1 Peter 5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
This month we explore the topic of surrender with the goal of learning how we might submit to His will and set aside our own. We begin the month of surrender by exploring how we might humble ourselves before the Lord. Being humble is natural to some people but for others it may be a struggle. Wherever you are in your walk, let today be a done to practice humility.
Humility is defined as a modeset or low view of one’s own importance. To be humble one must show a modest or low estimate of their importance to something, or in our case, to Christ. It is a heart attitude that we assume, one in which we are meek, obedient, and selfless (Colossians 3:12-13). This is challenging because we are naturally not selfless. We desire more for our lives, for our goals, our future, our roles in life. But we can put that aside and submit to God, being obedient to what HE is calling us to do, not what our personal desires or goals might be. We have to learn to align our hearts with His will for us and allow Him to work through us.
Peter calls us to humble ourselves under His mighty hand. We position ourselves in a manner that allows Him to be glorified, allowing Him to do what He alone can do through us. We simply obey. Saying “simply” is the challenge. It requires us to set aside self and listen to His calling. And then we obey.
How might we do this? We turn to God. We thank Him. We confess our sins to Him. We listen. We ask questions and wait for His hand to work in and through us. We consider others before ourselves, loving and caring for them. And He is faithful (2 Chronicles 7:14). He raises us up (James 4:10) and exalts us (Luke 5:3).
Today look for an opportunity in which you might focus on the needs of someone else. Be selfless, setting aside pride and living in accordance with our faith (Romans 12:3)
