Devotion: James 4:7

February 3, 2025

James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Today’s verse is another that is heard often by Christians. Today let’s take a peek back a few verses and get a better idea of what the context is for this verse that is so often quoted by itself.

Starting in James 4:4 we see that he refers to them as adulterous people (NIV) who are friends with the world. Friends with the world means these individuals were NOT following Christ first and foremost. They were not submitting to God, but were indulging in a worldly lifestyle. He even went so far as to say that a friend of the world is an enemy to God (James 4:4). I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t want to be an enemy to God! He then goes on to tell us to be humble, which leads into today’s verse.

Submit yourself to God, my friends. Surrender to Him and His will. Be fully, wholly, completely devoted to Him. Seek His will and what His plan is for your life, rather than indulging in what the world offers. And as we do this, we don’t give the enemy any leverage against us, any foothold in our life. The enemy will see Christ in us and will flee to escape because we are victorious in Him. Remember, humble yourself before God and He will lift you up (James 4:10).

Let today be the day you say goodbye to any sins you may still be indulging in. Resist the temptations of the enemy and laugh in victory when he flees because our God is a mighty conqueror.
