Devotion: Psalm 37:7

February 10, 2025

Psalm 37:7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.

There is nothing worse than seeing wickedness get ahead. We cry out at the injustice while we struggle to stay afloat in a world of evilness (Psalm 62:5). But the psalmist, who is believed to be King David, cautions us against fretting. Fret, as it is used here, comes from the Hebrew word chara, meaning to be angry or incensed, to blaze up (think hot flash or hot tempered). Instead, David tells us to be still and wait. And that is sometimes the hardest thing to do.

We must remember that the wicked are only successful for a time. Then that, too, shall pass. And while we may have our own struggles now, we have a glorious future ahead of us for all eternity with Him (1 John 2:17).  That future is so much better than the ones the wicked will face.

The question, then, is how we can be still before Him and wait patiently when everything inside of us screams at the injustice.  The answer is found in the beginning of the psalm.

Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. (Psalm 37:3-6)

When we wait on the Lord, we are surrendering to Him. We are giving Him our anxiety over the unknown or the unfair, we are letting His will be done in the situation rather than trying to do something ourselves, and we are focusing on Him rather than ourselves or the wicked. Our eyes need to be on Him at all times. That may mean we need to spend more time in the Word and in worship time with Him, and definitely more time in prayer. We need to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) as soon as they enter our mind and surrender them to Him.

I pray that today is a day focused on Him and surrendering to His will rather than looking at distractions of the wicked that may be taking place around you and making comparisons.
