Devotion: James 4:6

February 26, 2025

James 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

At the beginning of the month we learned about humility and being humble before the Lord. As we near the end of the month we are revisiting this topic for another look.

To review, humility is turning away from self and self-centered thinking and behavior, instead turning to God and surrendering before Him. A person who is humble is modest and not proud. They position themselves lower than others, in this case before God. We can be humble around people, but it is more important to be humble before God.

In this verse it specifically refers to pride as being problematic. We need to avoid being pride filled, instead choosing humility. We need to surrender our pride to Him, especially if we know it is a struggle in our lives.  If we wish to receive His grace we need to first of all identify where in our lives pride is an issue and surrender it to Him. We then need to seek His help in changing our pride to humility and we need to submit to His authority.

The thing to remember is that He loves us and freely gives His grace to His followers. He shows favor to the humble, but we all receive grace, undeserved though it is.

Don’t let pride interrupt the blessings in your life. Place God at the center of your life and submit humbly before Him.
