Devotion: Zephaniah 3:16

March 4, 2025

Zephaniah 3:16 On that day they will say to Jerusalem, “Do not fear, Zion; do not let your hands hang limp.”

Today’s verse (and the whole passage) looks to the future, to a day when we will be judged. If you have not read the verses around it, I highly suggest you do that now, before getting into today’s devotion. Root yourself in what is being said and the context from which this verse is taken.

We are reminded to stand strong and not fear. There is no reason we should fear enemies, now or in the future during the End Times. We have the confidence of being with Christ, the conquering Ruler and King. Even when we stand before the Father for judgement there is no reason for us to fear because we are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17), bought by the blood of the Lamb (1 Corinthians 6:20). We may feel shame as our secrets are judged, but we are safe in the arms of the Lord. All fear will be replaced by strength.

I don’t know about you, but I will not let my hands hang limp. I will be raising them in praise and adoration and will be working at whatever I am given to do. I will be His servant.

Does that mean this verse has no application to believers today? While it does point to a future time, we can draw strength from it for today. We are reminded that a day is coming where all sin and suffering will end, when tears will be wiped away, when we will be judged and made new. But for today, we should be working diligently to share the gospel and to be living a life worthy of Him. We should not let fear hold us back, but can step out in boldness and trust in His power in all challenges we face on this earth.
