Psalm 95:1 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
We are now two weeks into our month of praise and worship and we have seen many invitations to lift our hands and voices. Today’s scripture is yet another invitation, once more encouraging us to engage in gratitude filled actions that show our appreciation, admiration, and reverence towards God.
We don’t have an author or title for psalm 95, but the book of Hebrews attributes it to David (Hebrews 4:7). Regardless of who wrote it, the message is clear. It is a psalm of praise that invites others to engage in heartfelt worship.
The psalmist invites us to sing for joy to the Lord. We give Him honor through our songs, though singing is obviously not the only way one can worship God. In addition to singing, we see that the invitation is issued to “us.” Plural. We are called to worship with song IN COMMUNITY. Of course we can still sing and praise God individually, but this psalm invites US to sing praises. One of my favorite things to do with my fellow believers is to worship. There’s nothing more powerful than countless voices uniting as one in praise to God. Through song, we express emotion. Being an emotional person myself, worship often moves me to tears. I FEEL the music as much as I sing the words. It is very emotional for me.
We are also called to shout aloud. This doesn’t mean we are screaming and yelling in church or during worship. But we ARE to lift our voices enthusiastically. We are to be joyful in our worship, though there will be times when we are more somber as well.
And finally, our praise is directed to the Rock of our salvation. He is our protector, our provision, our strong tower. He is our strength in weakness. We build our lives upon a firm foundation in Him. We trust in Him to be our complete security and the Rock we stand on (1 Samuel 2:2, Psalm 18:31).
Join me today in singing JOYFULLY. Raise your voice in chorus with others. Raise it enthusiastically. Sing out with adoration and emotion. Praise His holy Name with abandonment and joy.
