James 1:25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it – not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it – they will be blessed in what they do.
What is the perfect law that gives freedom, as mentioned in this verse? Simply put, it is the gospel of Jesus Christ. By His blood we are redeemed. Through His sacrifice we are made new. Thanks to the covenant He has made with us through His death on the cross and resurrection from the grave, we have eternal life. And it is this that is referred to as the perfect law that gives freedom.
We are not discussing the old Law here. It is not referring to the old covenant between God and man that was handed down to Moses and the Israelites back in the Old Testament. That law served a purpose in showing us our need for a Savior. It pointed out that we cannot do it on our own and need Jesus to be the final sacrifice needed to pay the penalty of sin.
Our response should be living in obedience. We need to remember the sacrifice He has made for us and we need to seek His will for our lives. We should be doing all we can to live a life set apart, holy and dedicated to serving Him and His people. Our hearts should be sincere, fully focused on Him and His ways, not our own.
We also need to remember His sacrifice for us every day. We cannot hear the gospel and then forget about it. Our lives should be a reflection of Him and His ways, a life where we live in freedom and victory. We are obedient and follow His directives. We let Him guide us and lead us through each day, thankful for the grace and mercy we have received and sharing it with others.
This verse encourages us to move beyond knowing God’s truth to a life of action, one where we actively live it out in our daily actions and behaviors. And we experience blessings that come from living a life of faith. Are you living out your faith each day? Never forget what He has done for you and what you have been saved from.
