Psalm 119:44-45 I will always obey your law, for ever and ever. I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.
Psalm 119 is the longest psalm, as well as the longest chapter in the Bible. Thus it is easy to get lost in the words since there are so many. Today we focus on two verses from this longest chapter – verses that speak of obedience as well as freedom.
What is a precept? It is a general rule or principle that guides behavior or action. It usually refers to specific commandments or instruction. A precept provides us with the standards on how we should act and live, guidelines or a framework for moral decisions and behaviors. Knowing this, now we can better understand today’s verses.
We see in this psalm an unwavering dedication to obedience. The psalmist speaks of always obeying God’s law, for ever and ever. ALWAYS. It is a commitment one makes to respond to God’s law in obedience. And the result of that obedience? Freedom. The two are connected. Through our obedience to His word and His ways we are given freedom. You might think that we are limited or more restricted because we have strict guidelines to follow. But the opposite is true. We find freedom in obeying His laws rather than restriction and constraint. The psalmist recognizes the fact that seeking and following God’s precepts or His law, leads us to a sense of freedom and liberation. We are set free from the consequences of sin, free from guilt and condemnation. His law is a source of guidance, comfort, and blessing to us, not a rule book that holds us prisoner. And it is something we need to actively SEEK. It doesn’t just happen. We look to Him, follow His ways, look to His Word to show us how we are to live.
Are you seeking His ways and precepts? Or are you still struggling in the bonds of sin? Look to Him and His ways and find true freedom today.
