Devotion: Ephesians 4:30

Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

As we have already seen this month, the Holy Spirit is within us. He guides us, helps us to discern God’s truths, and gives us comfort. Today we are cautioned to be careful that we don’t grieve the Spirit who is with us.

What does it mean to grieve the Holy Spirit? This refers to any action that saddens or offends the Holy Spirit. Let me first say that the Spirit will never leave you. He may feel far away, but He is there. You only feel far away because sin separates us from God.  But you can rest assured that even if you cause offense to the Spirit, He is still present, still comforting you, and still filling you with His power.

Though we are new creations and our old self is dead, we are still sinners and still make mistakes. And sometimes those offenses cause sadness to the Holy Spirit. Just like we experience sadness when someone does wrong, the Spirit is saddened by our act. But we are still loved, still children of God.

As believers, we need to set aside the old self and become imitators of God. We need to put on the new self, the one modeled after Him. We need to cease with offensive behaviors like greed, lying, and anger. We need to love others as Christ loved us. We need to live a life that is pleasing to God.

When we strive for holiness and righteous living, we honor the Holy Spirit and maintain a healthy relationship with God.

But more importantly, we were sealed with the Spirit. That means we are connected and why you can be assured he will never leave you nor forsake you. We were marked with a stamp of approval, made His possessions, and therefore guaranteed a future inheritance from Him. Knowing that, we should do everything in our power to not grieve the Spirit.
