Devotion: Genesis 1:2

Aug 6, 2025

Genesis 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Some people question the existence of the Holy Spirit or are confused as to His role. But even as early as Genesis we see that the Spirit was present and was involved with creation. Today’s verse shows us that even before land was made, long before animals, plants, or people, the Spirit was present, hovering over the waters. This is the first time we see the Spirit in the Bible, but it is definitely not the last.

And interestingly enough, every time God is mentioned in the first chapters of the book of Genesis, the wording is plural. It is not just God the Father who created. All three persons of the Trinity were present at all times. Our translations to English lose that plurality, but in the original language it is plural.

The Hebrew word for “spirit” is ruakh. This means breath. It is the invisible life-energy of a person, in this case the Spirit itself. It can also mean wind or an invisible power that brings life from disorder. If it still isn’t quite clear to you, think about it this way. We see the effects of the wind as it blows trees or messes up your hair. But you don’t see the wind itself. God’s Spirit exists, He is with us providing peace and joy in our lives.

Even in times of darkness and chaos, the Spirit’s peaceful Presence can be seen. And the same is true in our own lives. We can be in the midst of struggle and chaos, feeling like our life is going nowhere and feeling lost and alone, but the Spirit is there. The Spirit is present, offering peace and comfort, creating order out of chaos.

Your life is not meant to be chaotic and disorderly. It is meant to have structure and peace. If you are living in chaos, this is your invitation to let go and let the Spirit fill you with peace and bring order to your life. It is time to let go and let the Spirit transform your chaos into a life that is pleasing to God. Are you ready?
