Devotion: Acts 8:39

Aug 21, 2025

Acts 8:39  ‘When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.’

The encounter between Philip and the eunuch was a divine appointment if ever there was one. Philip had been directed by an angel to travel south to the road from Jerusalem to Gaza where he found a eunuch reading a passage from Isaiah. This divine appointment was set in motion by the Spirit and Philip was obedient to the call. The meeting led to the eunuch believing and asking to be baptized. And then Philip was taken away supernaturally by the Spirit of the Lord and he continued spreading the gospel to others he encountered.

This story may seem out of the ordinary and unbelievable, but we must remember that all scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching (2 Timothy 3:16). It was included because it is important. There is something we can learn from it, something important. Philip serves as an example for how we should respond when the Spirit leads us. He obeyed. He went south on the road and he met the person God wanted him to speak with. And the eunuch’s life was changed because of it. He was baptized and continued on his way rejoicing in his newfound faith.

We have the same Spirit with us, guiding us along our ways, orchestrating divine appointments where we can be instrumental in changing lives. The question is are you listening to the Spirit? Are you allowing Him to guide you to people who need the message you have to share? He isn’t supernaturally transporting us to our destinations, but He is prompting you to go, arranging those encounters, and laying it upon your heart to speak.

We may not have supernatural elements at work in our lives but we do have the Spirit and He is working. And He wants to work through you to touch lives and bring about transformation in those you encounter. Allow Him to use you in these divinely arranged encounters. Be sensitive to the urging of the Spirit and obey His prompting. You, too, can send people on their way rejoicing in their faith.
