As a female, I know that your appearance counts very much. If you look good, you feel good (well, most times). If you look sloppy then your mood is probably the same. I have constantly heard people saying, “If I have the body for the clothes why can’t I wear it?” Listen girls, wearing extra short skirts, or tight tops, isn’t what is attractive to a guy, at least the kind of guy that you want to catch. You can feel good wearing less revealing clothes and look even better
1 Peter 3:3-5 says: “Your beauty should not be the outer beauty of elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornaments or of fine clothes; rather, it should be an inner beauty with the imperishability of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes. For in the past, the holy women who hoped in God also beautified themselves in this way…”
In Brio Magazine (a magazine for Christian teen girls) it stated that, in a recent survey of teen guys in our youth group, an overwhelming majority stated they wished girls would dress more modestly. Eighty-six percent commented that girls wear tops that are too revealing. Sixty-four percent said that current styles of skirts and shorts are not modest enough. One section of the survey allowed the guys to add any comments they wanted. Because they could remain anonymous, the guys dared to share what they really thought. Here are some of their statements.
- “God has blessed girls with beauty inside and out. It’s not necessary for them to reveal their body or portions of it to entice.”
- “Put some clothes on!”
- “It’s not all about what you wear that we like- it’s your heart and personality.”
- I wish girls knew that “dressing immodestly is really a stumbling block for guys.”
- “Please dress modestly. Some girls wear extremely tight clothes and it actually turns guys off. We want girls to be women of God, not just lust magnets!”
- ” I wish women would try to attract men with their godly character, integrity and class, not just with their looks.”
Your probably wondering what is appropriate to wear then, if your shirt is so tight that you can se the outline of your bra, then you shouldn’t wear it. Sit down, and lean over, if your breasts are visible, the cut is probably not suitable for you. If you have to lay down to put on pants the pant are too tight. If it feels like the pants are a second layer of skin it is too tight. When trying on a skirt, stand up and bend over does you undergarment show, or does it stop just below your undergarment than it is way to short. if a strong gust of wind blew, would the hem of your skirt be wrapped around your waist, and your underwear be the featured view, if so, it‘s a no-no.
Dannah Gresh once wrote in an article, “What Advertisers Know About Your Body,” that God knew what he was doing when he created women. He originally created women to complete and finish man. Check it out! In Genesis 2:18, God himself says, “It is not good for man to be alone.” Alone? The God of the universe was walking and talking with Adam. How could he have been alone? God could easily filled the void in Adam. He didn’t. Instead, he crafted a master-piece – woman!
You are one of those masterpieces! And you’ve been given all of the power of a masterpiece that is worthy of every glance. Given the purpose, it’s not a stretch to believe that our carefully crafted and curved bodies create quite a stir in guys. A girl’s body really drives a guy crazy. According to God, there should be one catch to all that craziness. Check out Proverbs 5:18-19 where it tells a man to “rejoice in the wife of your youth…may you be ever captivated by her love.”
There is nothing left to the imagination, which is the most tempting part of immodesty. If a guy sees a girl walking around in tight clothes, a miniskirt or short shorts, you might as well hang a noose around the neck of his spiritual life. To us, this is not “just fashion.” It’s a constant source of spiritual failure. Have some mercy!
