Average Joes & Plain Janes

by Micah Messer

Who would’ve thought a common peasant girl like Mary would be chosen for as mother of the Messiah? Who would’ve guessed a simple carpenter like Joseph would be chosen as the father of the Christ? Who would’ve imagined an ordinary couple from Nazareth would be chosen as the parents for God? It seems foolish. It appears insane. It sounds crazy. But God destroys the the wisdom of the wise and frustrates the intelligence of the intelligent. (Isaiah 29:14) For the foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of man, and the weakness of God is stronger than the strength of man. (1 Cor. 1:25)

God transforms the humdrum into the holy. He parted the waves of the Red Sea with a staff. He crumbled the walls of Jericho with trumpets. He fed Elijah with ravens. God changes the mundane into the miraculous. He cured blindness with mud. He turned water into wine. He fed thousands with two fish and five loaves. God uses ordinary objects for instruments of praise. He used fleece for Gideon and a jawbone for Samson. God calls plain people for vessels of honor. He turned a shepherd boy into King David and an orphan girl into Queen Esther. He made dreamers like Joseph and Daniel leaders of Egypt and Babylon. He calls a tax collector and a fisherman to be his disciples. He calls harlots like Rahab, farmers like Amos, cupbearers like Nehemiah and wanderers like Moses. He calls a peasant girl and a carpenter to be His parents. Now He calls you. And He calls me.

God wants to transform you into someone holy. God desires to make a miracle of your mundane life. God longs to change your ordinary objects into instruments of praise. God calls plain Janes and average Joes for vessels of honor. Regardless of their situations and circumstances, God guides and provides for His own. God chooses people devoted to Him not detoured by life to change the world.
