Christians and Dancing

By: Mandy Hughett

Do Christians and dancing go together? As I have been searching for a Christian college, I have found that many do not allow dancing. I have also found out that many Christian denominations do not either. I have decided to research the reasoning behind this, NOT to tell you that what you believe is wrong, but to help give you an understanding on why many people believe that dancing is from Satan.

Many Christians believe that dancing is a form of temptation, and because of this, they believe if they dance, they are making Satan happy. Some Christians do not believe in dancing because most of the people that go to dances are sexually active. I am going to have to reply to this comment. I have attended every dance I could since before the seventh grade. I for one am not sexually active, because I AM A CHRISTIAN. However I go to dances and I dance because I believe that dancing is one of my God-given gifts. Saying most of the people that go to dances are sexually active is only a myth. There are probably those select few who are, but it isn’t because they go to dances.

Ecclesiastes 3:4 states “There is a time to dance.” Dancing is in the Bible and as the scripture DOES say, there really is a time to dance. 2 Samuel 6:16 says, “King David was leaping and dancing before the Lord.” Psalm 30:11 states “You turned my wailing into dancing.” Why would God turn wailing into dancing if He did not agree with it? Would that make sense? Psalm 149: 3 says, “Let them praise His name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and harp.” Notice that each scripture I gave mentioned dancing is not wrong.

You might ask if some Christians don’t believe in dancing, is that going against the Bible? Most likely not. Some people do not like to dance and that is ok. However to say it is wrong, I can’t agree with that. It is in the Bible that dancing is ok, and as long as you don’t dance a way that goes against your beliefs (shows other people you are not really a Christian) then in my opinion, dance a way!

Whether or not you worship dance or social dance, keep your actions in mind. Remember that your actions speak louder than your words. Some dancing is great in many ways. However, some dancing, such as what you would call “dirty dancing” is not always a good thing. If you are a Christian, show your beliefs. If you like to dance, dance. But remember non-believers
might be watching, so dance wearing your faith and never take it off.
