Devotion: 1 Peter 5:6-7

July 23, 2024

1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxieties on him because he cares for you.

Being an anxious person, I appreciate seeing verses like this that speak to me of the exact things I struggle with. In these two verses we see instruction on humility under God’s hand and how it has long term effects. It is also important to note, there is a direct correlation between humility and anxiety.

God’s hand refers to His power to save as well as to protect Christian followers. Through our humility we are placing ourselves under His control. We also acknowledge our own limitations. Our humility leads to us being lifted up by God or exalted. We must humble ourselves, which can be hard to do sometimes because our flesh is weak.

Casting our anxieties on Him is us acknowledging His power and greatness as we humbly come before Him . We realize we cannot do it alone and only He can do it. We recognize the power that comes from obedience.

Today let’s stop what we are doing, humble ourselves, and give up any anxiety we have. Give it to God. He alone can take our anxiety and transform it into peace and joy. But we have to give it to Him first as we bow before Him in humble submission.
