Devotion: 1 Corinthians 12:11

Aug 31, 2025

1 Corinthians 12:11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Prior to today’s verse, Paul teaches about spiritual gifts we receive. He points out that believers are all blessed with different gifts and we may not have the same gift as others. We each have gifts that enable us to serve others in the manner that best suits us and all of the gifts are important and necessary.

Though there are many different gifts, the source of them all is the same – the Holy Spirit. No one chooses the gifts we have. The Spirit distributes them to us, as He sees fit. He alone determines what gifts we need and no gift is better than another. All are relevant and of value. He assigns them for the benefit of the Church, not to reward someone or to give them an advantage. There is a purpose for our gifts and we should thank Him for determining exactly which gifts are best for us. He gives them to strengthen the community of believers and we can use them to bless others and encourage them.

Paul wrote this to correct a behavior and belief he saw in the community he was writing to. They were valuing some gifts over others, glorifying the gifts and not the Giver. He wanted to remind them that every gift is unique and has purpose. Each gift satisfies a need within the body. And every gift originates from the same Source. Criticizing or rejecting gifts was prideful and incorrect because they are intended to be used to serve others and bring glory to God, not self.

If you have never discovered your spiritual gifts I want to encourage you to do so. There are quizzes and questionnaires online that will help you identify and understand your own gifts. Once you know what they are, look for ways you can use your gifts to bless others. The Spirit is faithful and eager to reveal your gifts to you!
