1 Corinthians 2:11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
We begin today with an analogy. In it Paul gives us a comparison that helps us better understand the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. And now, having read it a few times to prepare for today’s devotion, I find myself wondering why I never noticed this verse in my previous studies of 1 Corinthians.
The first half of the verse reminds us that no one knows our thoughts except us. We are the only ones who know what is going on in our heads and unless we verbalize those thoughts they remain locked away within us. Paul then makes the comparison that is the basis of our time together today. It is only the Holy Spirit that knows and understands the knowledge and wisdom of God. Our human minds cannot comprehend even a fraction of His greatness, His wisdom and truths.
But here’s where it gets good – because we have the Spirit within us, God allows us access to just a minuscule fraction of His greatness. The Spirit reveals His truths to us as we need them, as we grow and seek to know Him more. Paul tells us that because of and through the Spirit residing within us, God reveals His truths to us. We are only able to discern God’s wisdom with the help of the Spirit – that same Spirit who knows all of God’s thoughts. How amazing is that? We have a direct line into the Father’s mind.
Today I encourage everyone to pause in their day and thank God for giving us the Holy Spirit. Show gratitude to Him for opening the door to learning more about His truths and praise Him for the wisdom He grants us access to. Seek Him and His thoughts, ask the Spirit to open your eyes to the message God has for you today, and then listen. His Spirit is ready to share new and wonderful things with you when you turn to Him with an open heart ready to receive.
