Devotion: 1 Corinthians 2:7

September 16, 2024

1 Corinthians 2:7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.

Today’s passage is but one verse in a chain of discussion on the subject of wisdom – human wisdom versus that of God. When you look at just this verse you might wonder why God’s wisdom is called a mystery and is kept hidden. But as with anything we read, we have to remember not to take just the daily verse and pull it out of context. Any time you question what it means or what they could be referring to, always go back and read the chapter to make sure you get the full picture.

In this section we see clearly that we have a limited understanding. We may think we are wise or have gained some wisdom in specific areas or on certain subjects, but we learn from this chapter that the wisdom we have is worldly, limited, human wisdom, not God’s.

But with the guidance of the Spirit within us, with us seeking the truth of these mysteries hidden from everyone, we can have our spiritual eyes opened to the Truth. We can see the things God destined for His people since before time began. We can see what otherwise is invisible to the world. All we have to do is seek Him and ask (Matthew 7:7-8) and the hidden mysteries are revealed.

And once we have received this wisdom from Him, we can live in the fullness of the glory of God. We do not need to live as those in the early church in Corinth lived – in spiritual infancy. We can mature in our faith and grow in His grace through the revelation of the mysteries hidden from us but destined for our glory since before time began.

Are you struggling in your faith, stuck in spiritual infancy but longing for more? Ask for God to grant you His wisdom. Seek Him and His Truth. And listen for the Spirit to reveal it to you.
