Devotion: 1 John 4:18-19

July 18, 2024

1 John 4:18-19 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us.

There is no fear in love. None. Isn’t that a beautiful thought? We have nothing to fear because we have God and His love. His love makes us complete. His love gives us life. His love is perfected in us (1 John 4:12).

But what is “perfect love?” This section of Scripture is meant to encourage believers who have fear regarding the final day of judgment. John wants to encourage believers and reassure them that they have nothing to fear when standing before the throne. We can be free of fear because God’s love is in us. And His love is perfect. He loves us no matter how many times we mess up, no matter how many times we fall and come crawling back. Though we will stand before Him in judgment, we are secure in His love.

God is love (John 4:16). Perfect love is an expression of His love for us. That love is not just for us, but also in us. We love Him because He first loved us and we are reflecting that perfect love back. We have nothing to fear because there is no condemnation for those in Christ (Romans 8:1). If there is no condemnation, then there should be no fear of judgment.

Are you living in fear of judgment? Are you struggling with believing you are not good enough for Him? None of us are. But He still loved us enough to die for us and is waiting for us to realize that His perfect love is ready to push those fears aside. They have no place in our lives. Do not let the enemy fill you with doubt and fear. Don’t let him make you doubt God’s love because that is when we are not made perfect in love. Instead, embrace His perfect love and give it back as much as you can.

Have faith, friend. There is no fear in love, just sweet, blissful perfection.
