Devotion: 1 John 5:13

June 17, 2025

1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

In today’s verse, we see a declaration of faith being made in the words spoken by the Apostle John. He was writing to believers, those who already accepted Jesus as their savior. And it serves as a reminder that we KNOW we have eternal life, not just hope for it or think we may receive it. We KNOW we have it because we have faith in Him.

This verse is a direct statement that summarizes the overall message and purpose of the Apostle’s letter – the assurance of salvation. When he spoke of “these things” in the beginning of the verse, he was referring to what was said in the previous passage when he assured them that belief in Christ guarantees salvation. There is no guessing involved, no wondering. We have the assurance, the absolute belief that we have salvation and eternal life. Those who know God and follow His ways show evidence that He is in their lives and that they are saved.

We have said this repeatedly this month – it is by faith we are saved, not by our own merits or works we do. Our faith in Him saves us, through His grace and mercy. And that is why it is so important for us to be growing in faith daily. We need to seek Him, to discover His ways, and live in a way that is pleasing to Him. Doing this is the evidence mentioned above, the evidence that He is in our lives and we are saved.

John goes on with more teaching after this assurance. I highly recommend that you read the remainder of the chapter and learn more about living a life for God. Learn from the Apostle John and let the Holy Spirit guide your daily walk.
