1 Peter 2:16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.
In today’s verse we see that we are to live a life of freedom. But we are also cautioned not to let that freedom become an excuse to continue to engage in old ways. Those old ways are now behind us and we have a new life. We have been made new creations and no longer walk in the past sins. We look forward now, not back, and our behavior should reflect that.
In our past, we were slaves to sin. We were slaves to the bad behaviors and unrighteous actions that doomed us to a life of eternal separation. But Peter says we should live as God’s slaves. Now we are free from the past and the bonds that held us far from His love and peace. We had no choice before, but now we do. Now we choose to live as God’s slaves.
Though it sounds contrary, there is freedom in being a slave to someone as amazing as God. Freedom from judgment, freedom from guilt, and freedom from eternal death. The chains that bind us now are ones we put on ourselves, chains of holiness and righteousness. Chains that lift us up and carry us through the struggles of life and strengthen us in the face of trial.
True freedom in Christ is found in Him alone, not in lawlessness or hidden sin and evil ways. It is found through our voluntary service and dedication to God. We live a life that is wholly His, devoted to Him and Him alone.
Today let’s step into those godly chains and spread His love to those we encounter. Look for the divine appointments He has set before you and do your duty to extend His love to those in need. Live a life in service to the God who loved you enough to send His Son to die for your sins.
