Devotion: 1 Peter 2:9

Sept. 10, 2025

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

If any verse tells you that you were created for a purpose, it is this one. It defines the spiritual identity we have in Jesus once we become believers and it emphasizes the purpose we have in our lives. It is a powerful verse and one you should highlight in your Bible and repeat to yourself often.

Each of us has been chosen. We have been called (2 Timothy 1:9) and have been given a new identity, one that was established on the cross when Jesus died for our sins. We were washed in His blood (1 John 1:7) and made new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Better than that, we are a royal priesthood and a holy nation. We have direct access to God like the priests in the Old Testament, no longer needing to go through another person to have our sins forgiven. And not only are we a priesthood, but a holy one at that. We have royal status through Christ and we represent His kingship and sovereignty here on earth. And if that isn’t enough, we are a holy nation, separate and sanctified, set apart by God and different than the world we live in.

All of this leads to our purpose. We are His representatives here on earth. We are His servants that are proclaiming His name. We are His special possession, His chosen people. He loves us and wants none to perish (John 3:16; 2 Peter 3:9). And people will not experience the goodness of God if we, His royal priesthood, don’t share the Gospel with them. We have a purpose. We have a job to do, people to serve, and lives to lead to Christ.

You have been called out of the darkness of sin and despair and have been drawn into His wonderful light. Don’t you want the same for others? Today is the day to share His message with others.
