Devotion: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Nov. 8, 2025

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

This is one of my favorite passages in the Bible and one we have studied in previous devotions. But today we are looking at it once more and talking about thanksgiving.

We do all of this – rejoicing always and pray continuously but all with a thankful heart. Everything we do should be full of gratitude and thanks to the Lord. Thanksgiving should be sprinkled over every aspect of our lives because without it we are selfish and are not giving the glory where due.

AI had a very informative view on the portion that is about thanksgiving. It says, “Believers are called to give thanks in all circumstances, not necessarily for all circumstances (e.g., evil or sin). This means cultivating a heart of gratitude and trusting in God’s sovereign hand to work all things for good, even in difficult times. This thankful perspective helps shift focus from what is lacking to God’s constant provision and presence.”

We give thanks in ALL circumstances, including those that are not the best. While it may seem strange to us to be thankful about things that are not the best, those times and trials are still shaping us and God uses all things for His glory, including our bad times. It is hard to have a heart that is grateful during those times, but we are to try and cultivate a heart of gratitude regardless.

Today let’s make it our goal to have a heart that is grateful in all circumstances, not just the good ones.
