Devotion: 1 Timothy 1:16

Mar 12, 2026

1 Timothy 1:16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.

When we think about the worst of the worst sinners, Paul is not usually among those that rank in our top ten list. He wrote the majority of the New Testament and was the primary teacher and model for Christian living that instructed and continues to instruct believers everywhere.

But when we remember Paul’s background, what he was before that fateful encounter with Christ on the road, we realize that Paul was not a good guy. He was one of the biggest enemies of faith, persecuting, prosecuting, and executing believers and trying to destroy Christianity in his zealousness. Yet, God showed His great patience through His interaction with Paul. He showed us that no one is beyond God’s grace and mercy. No matter what Paul had done, despite all the actions he took against early believers, God knew his heart and the potential within him. He loved him despite how zealous he was and forgave him.

And the same is true for you and me. No matter how far we stray, how bad we are, how horrible those sins may be, you are loved beyond measure. You are cherished. Jesus desires that intimate relationship with you. The Spirit is waiting to fill you. You are not beyond God’s reach. Your worst is not so bad it disqualifies you for grace. He is there, ready to forgive and welcome you into the family.

Today let’s keep in mind this verse and the hope it represents for sinners everywhere. It serves as a comforting reminder to those who may feel overwhelmed by their past. It demonstrates that God is patient and He can redeem any past, even the past we think makes us too far gone to be saved. Turn to Him and repent today.

Prayer: Lord, Thank You for Your patience with me. I do not deserve Your forgiveness yet You give it anyway. Forgive me, wash me, and make me new. Amen
