Devotion:1 Timothy 2:1

October 18, 2024

1 Timothy 2:1 – I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.

Today’s verse mentions different types of prayer as Paul transitions readers into a new subject in his letter. He begins instructing Timothy on church management issues beginning with the need for prayer. While he mentions four different ways to pray, the focus is on one thing – the need for prayer first and foremost. He points out the importance of praying for everyone, for all people. In verse two he explains a bit more of who “all” includes – those in authority positions. Let’s take a quick look at the types of prayer.

Petitions is also translated in other versions as supplication. This is the process of asking for something needed. We see this term thirteen times in the Bible. Typically petitions are urgent requests, cries for help made to God. A few times we see this used: 1 John 5:15, Ephesians 6:18, and Philippians 4:6-7.

Prayers are requests for things wished for or that we desire from God, whether for ourselves or for others. This is the general use of the process, specifically talking to God. It is when we seek Him specifically by communicating with Him.

Intercession is the process of praying for others. We intercede on their behalf. We lift up requests to God to do something for others, not for ourselves. James 5:14-15 is an example of intercessory prayer.

And we conclude with thanksgiving. This is the process of thanking God for all He has done or will do. Many of the psalms are prayers of thanksgiving.

Regardless of which method of prayer we employ, the fact remains – we need to be praying. And our prayers are not just for us and our own lives, but for all people. That includes nonbelievers. We should show no bias in our prayers.

Hopefully today helped clarify a few different types of prayers and gave you something new to focus on in your own prayer life. If you feel you spend more time praying for yourself and are neglecting thanksgiving, change up your routine and focus specifically on offering thanks. Or if you know someone in need, intercede on their behalf.

Regardless of HOW, just pray.  That’s what is most important.
