Devotion: 2 Corinthians 4:16

February 22 2025

2 Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

Looking at today’s verse you may find yourself wondering how it relates to the topic of surrender when it in no way indicates submission, surrender, or humility in any way. But it is through surrender that this verse is achieved. Let’s explore it further.

The next two verses help make more sense of what is being discussed, this reason for not losing heart and daily renewal. “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).

And how does that help it all make sense? While we live here on earth we face struggles. We experience trials. We live lives that are not necessarily easy. And it wears on us. Outwardly we appear to be wasting away, we bear scars, we cope with trauma. But we have hope. Hope in the unseen. Hope in the eternal. Hope in heaven.

It is this hope that sustains us and keeps us moving forward. Hope that helps us from losing heart and becoming discouraged. And the only way we can experience this hope is through surrender. We must seek Him, His will, His plan for our lives. We must accept His will, submit to His ways, and turn from our own. Turning to Him and seeking Him daily renews us and fills us with hope. It renews us day by day.

Who’s ways are you following? Yours or His? Surrender your ways to Him and seek His way and be renewed day by day.
