Devotion: 2 Corinthians 5:5

March 21, 2025

2 Corinthians 5:5 Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

When you first read this verse by itself, you may find yourself wondering what purpose Paul is referring to. Reading back just one verse gives you a better understanding, though, as usual, I encourage you to read further to ensure you know what is being said. Paul is speaking of his desire to be done with this earthly body, which he refers to as a tent (fitting for a man whose occupation is as tentmaker) and to be reborn in his eternal body that would last forever.

Unfortunately, we all have fleshly, sin riddled bodies that we dwell in, bodies which are breaking down and falling apart. We have imperfect, failing bodies that we use to do the best we can to glorify Him. Fortunately, though, we have been given the Holy Spirit to fill us and offer us strength and hope. The Spirit within us is called a “deposit” by Paul, giving us a guarantee of what is to come – eternity.

Be encouraged, friend! We have a glorious future awaiting us. We have new bodies, unbroken, free of pain, perfect in every way waiting for us. We only inhabit these temporary vessels for a short time. It may feel endless, but it is just a little blip in the timeline of eternity.

For that reason we can live our lives confidently and full of hope and joy because we know that the Holy Spirit is the promise of what is to come. We have a foretaste of the beauty that is coming. The Spirit has sealed us for redemption (Ephesians 4:30) and we KNOW we will be changed!
