Devotion: 2 Corinthians 9:15

Nov. 21, 2025

2 Corinthians 9:15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

If you read this verse out of context you are left wondering “what indescribable gift?” That is why it is always important that you read passages, not just verses, even when you are only given one verse like we received for today’s message.

The gift in today’s verse is speaking of salvation – the sacrifice Jesus made for us, giving Himself on the cross in our place and saving us from eternal separation. But why did Paul call it “indescribable?” It is a gift that is so amazing and beyond words, wholly magnificent and truly unbelievable that the only way to understand it is through experiencing a sense of awe and wonder, which then results in an overwhelming outpouring of gratitude towards God.

Because of what He did for us and what He gave us, we can’t help but be grateful and show our gratitude through the praise and worship we feel. Paul encouraged the Corinthians to be generous in their giving. The verse serves as a conclusion to the discussion on the act of giving, and it is useful for reminding believers that all good things come from God and that gratitude should be the basis and foundation of our giving.

To put it simply, we give because He gave His life for us. We give out of gratitude because His gift is beyond our understanding. We give because it is the only natural response we can experience that expresses our heart.

How do you thank God for His sacrifice for your sins? What is your natural response to His indescribable gift?
