Devotion: 2 Samuel 10:12

March 12, 2025

2 Samuel 10:12 Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in His sight.

If this verse looks familiar, it is because it is. This is the same verse we covered earlier in the month, though it was from a different book of the Bible. So why was it included in this month’s list of devotions? Why repeat this lesson? There is more to learn.

To review, this verse is a statement from Joab, one of the commanders of David’s army. In it he was encouraging the troops to stand firm in their faith because God was with them and would do what was good in His sight.  But what does that mean when we say “good in His sight?”

This phrase is used in reference to actions that please God. It shows us that things that are done are acceptable to Him. The phrase shows deep trust in God and His sovereignty. It means the results of human efforts are all in His hands, not our own. Though we may plan the course of action (Proverbs 16:9), the outcome is dependent upon Him. He establishes our steps. We submit to His will, just as Jesus did when He prayed in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39). We allow Him to work in our lives, in our hearts. It is HIS sight that directs our steps, HIS will, not our own.

The Amplified Bible brings us a different perspective: “Be courageous, and let us show ourselves courageous for the benefit of our people and the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”

Let us show ourselves courageous. Be bold. It is for everyone’s benefit when we do this. But it is still the Lord’s plan that will be done in the end. Notice it says “MAY THE LORD DO” – not may the people do this for Him or may the people succeed in battle, but may the LORD do…

Are you trying to do it all on your own? Give it to God and let Him do what is good in His sight.
