Devotion: 2 Samuel 22:51

Dec 8, 2025

2 Samuel 22:51 “He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”

Today we visit King David near the end of his reign. This verse concludes the song of thanksgiving (which is found in Psalm 18) written by David, where he speaks of God’s protection from King Saul, salvation and protection from various enemies and foes (including his own son at one point), and personal trials. The unfailing kindness (hesed in Hebrew) He shows includes the Davidic Covenant (found in 2 Samuel 7), promising an everlasting dynasty, which is fulfilled in Christ.

In this verse, we see David referring to God’s kindness as unfailing. This is a fitting description for the kindness God shows to us. No matter how sinful we are, no matter how far we stray before coming back, no matter how unworthy we are to receive His grace and forgiveness, He STILL shows unfailing kindness towards all of His children.

The verse concludes David’s reflection on God as his rock, fortress, and deliverer. This is how we should see God in our own lives. We know He has unfailing love and kindness for us, and He is our rock, our fortress to which we run when in need, and the deliverer that rescues us from the trials we face. David attributed his survival and success entirely to God’s commitment, not his own. The same is true for us. We have done nothing on our own to earn His favor (Ephesians 2:8-9) yet He still loved us and gave His Son for our sins.

God loves us with an eternal, steadfast love and mercy, and He shows compassion towards mankind that draws people close to Him. We see this in Scripture like Jeremiah 31:3 (“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness”), as well as in today’s verse. If He did not love us, He would not show us this unfailing kindness spoken of in multiple places in Scripture.

Let’s not forget that though we are sinful creatures who make mistakes and fail time and time again, He loves us no matter what. He loves us and shows us unfailing kindness. Allow His kindness to bless your life and then show others the same kindness you have received.
