Devotion: 2 Timothy 1:9

Oct. 15, 2025

2 Timothy 1:9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.

We are sinners by nature, having inherited that sinful nature from Adam who chose to disobey God and eat from the tree of knowledge. We cannot escape the sins in our life and because of it we are destined for eternal separation from God because nothing unholy can be in His presence (Revelation 21:27).

Luckily, we have verses like today’s that give us hope and encouragement. We have been saved through the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross and we have been redeemed (Ephesians 1:7). We have been saved by the grace of God and it is that grace that sets us apart and gives us purpose.

But more than that, He has called us to a holy life. Some translations say we have a holy calling. We are called to live holy, set apart, different from the rest of the world. We are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:7) and as such, we are meant to live a righteous, holy life. And He had that plan since the beginning. He made a way for us to be saved from the moment Adam sinned, from the minute sin entered the world, and better than that, even before – before the beginning of time. That is a hard concept for us to understand because we think in finite terms. We only see time as we know it, but God exists outside of that time and had a plan for redeeming us from the BEFORE the beginning of time. He loved us that much and always will.

Live as heirs to righteousness. Be different. Let the world wonder what is different about you and be the Jesus someone sees today in you. Live for Him because He died for you and called you to a life of holiness. Share His grace with someone today because He called them to holiness in the same way He called you.
