Devotion: 2 Timothy 3:16

Jan 15, 2026

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…

This is one of my favorite verses and I quote it often in my devotions because it is a great reminder that every Word of the Bible is inspired and has purpose and meaning. I am excited to get to explore the verse in a devotion of its own. Let’s jump in and see what the Spirit reveals to us today.

People often ask if the Bible is reliable and can it be trusted. Yes! It can. It is a divinely inspired book that offers us guidance and direction for how to live. It reveals God to us and offers us hope and encouragement. And it is trusted because it is authoritative, reliable, and useful for us. The Bible originates directly from God, from His very breath. Breath in the Greek is theopneustos and is the direct flow from God to His works, in this case, the Bible. It is not just human ideas or creations from some very religious people. Those people were used by God to share His Word directly with us for our benefit.

Paul explains to Timothy that there are four key functions of the Word of God – teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. Teaching is doctrine, where we learn God’s truth. Rebuking is used to expose sin within humanity and within us. Correcting is where we set things right and learn to live the way He intended us to live. And the final part is training in righteousness which is where we shape our character and find guidance to Godly living.

All of this comes together in the Bible to equip us for every good work. And it is not just a few Scriptures, a handful of passages, but ALL Scripture. Every single word has a purpose and its purpose is for your benefit.

That means that we have no excuse for not living a life of obedience. We have detailed instructions for holy living. We have the very words of God that tell us how we should be living. Obedience is a must. And we can’t pick and choose which parts to embrace and which to reject – we accept the Bible in its entirety as inspired and authoritative.

Today choose to step into obedience and embrace the Word of God as useful for teaching us, correcting us, rebuking sins, and teaching us. Spend some time in the Word because there is no way to know how to live unless you read it and put it into action.

Prayer: Lord, I believe Your Word is inspired and beneficial to us for living. Help me to learn truths from it and walk in obedience as I live it each day. Amen
