Devotion: Acts 1:8

Sept. 18, 2025

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Each of us has been given a commission. We are to go forth and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). We see in today’s verse that we are not only commissioned to be His witnesses, but we are empowered by the Holy Spirit when we share. We become witnesses of the grace and mercy of God when we let the Spirit guide us as we share with others.

The disciples waited in Jerusalem to receive the Holy Spirit. But you and I don’t have to wait. We received the Spirit when we became believers. The Spirit is within us now, ready to guide us as we go forth to share. He is ready for us to listen and obey, stepping out in faith that He will take us where we need to go and will establish those divine appointments for us to engage with.

In a previous devotion (from August 2025), we covered this same verse. At that time I said, “The power the first disciples received wasn’t to bring about political gain or to end military conflicts in their region. It was the Spirit inhabiting them and transforming them. And through this transformation power they were able to share the gospel and lead hundreds of people to Christ that first day. And that same Power that filled them is available to you and me.”

We have a purpose for our lives. We are to share the gospel, to be witnesses of the grace we have received. In doing so, we fulfill an even greater purpose as one Body in Christ. We help to grow the Church and save souls. People all around the world need to hear the good news and need Jesus. But don’t think you need to travel around the world to share. We can make disciples of all nations in our own backyards and communities. We start with our own friends and families and go from there.

Are you ready to step out in faith and be a witness? Today, let’s make the effort to reach out to someone who needs Jesus in their lives. Tell them your own story. Share how you came to know Jesus as your personal Savior and what it means to you. Share His grace with them. And let the Holy Spirit empower you to share with those you meet.
