Devotion: Colossians 1:11

Colossians 1:11 …being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience.

As we approach the end of the month, we have covered many amazing verses to inspire us and strengthen our walk. Numerous times I have said work to be filled with His power, His boldness, confident in His might and trusting in His guidance. Today’s verse speaks of just that – His power and glorious might.

Since our verse is a continuation of a statement, we need to read back to understand the context. In this case you should read from verse one to today’s verse, as there are quite a lot of connecting thoughts  that lead up to verse 11. It is all part of a prayer from Paul to the Corinthian believers.

His prayer for these believers was that they would be strengthened by God’s power. God’s power gives us the ability to endure whatever life throws at us. It provides us the strength to stand against the trials of life, the struggles we face. Paul said in Romans 15:5 that He is the God of endurance and encouragement, both of which every Christian needs (Hebrews 10:36).

His power also gives us patience, which is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). And patience demonstrates that we are growing spiritually. For some people (I speak of me in this case), patience is not the easiest thing. But even if you are not the most patient person, you CAN be – with His power. We must set aside self and allow His power to do what we cannot or what we struggle with.

And with His power we will find that we live a life full of peace and joy. That does mean we will never again face hardships or feel discouraged. We will. But when we walk with Christ and allow His power to fill and guide us, our lives are so much better.
