Devotion: Colossians 1:12

Nov. 24, 2025

Colossians 1:12 …and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.

Today we are taken into the book of Colossians, written by Paul to warn the church in Colossae against the heresy that mixed elements of Greek philosophy, Jewish legalism, and angel worship with Christianity. His purpose in writing was to establish Christ as the Supreme power and sovereign King. And that alone is reason enough to be grateful and praise His name!

Now for today’s verse. Colossians 1:12 tells us we should give thanks for God’s actions He has taken to save mankind and redeem us from eternal separation (Romans 6:23), specifically because He has “qualified” us, the believers in Christ, to receive an inheritance in the kingdom of light – heaven and eternity. This qualification is not earned through any effort we put forth, but is a gracious gift from God, sealed and delivered through Christ.

We must remember that it is grace that has saved us, not our own works (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is a gift from God and because of this, He has qualified all of us who were once unworthy and undeserving, and has redeemed us through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Through this gift we have been granted an inheritance into the kingdom of light, a reference to the promised eternal life in God’s presence, whether in heaven or when His kingdom comes to earth in the final days.

This verse reminds us that we are to have ongoing, continuous thankfulness for what He has given us and continues to bless us with. We should have an attitude of gratitude, full of gratefulness and thanks for all He is and all He has done. We acknowledge His power and recognize the grace He has extended to us and we celebrate that by praising Him in a grateful posture of thanksgiving.

Join me today in thanking God for the grace He has given us, for the promised inheritance we all have thanks to what Jesus did for us on the cross. Thank Him for your salvation, for the grace He extended to you to forgive your sins, for the continued grace that He showers us with day after day, and for all that is yet to come. Praise His holy name!
