Colossians 1:13-14 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
These two verses conclude a prayer Paul included in his letter to the Colossian Christians. They are part of a section of the epistle where he is reviewing Christ and His preeminence and affirmation of the salvation we receive. Verses 13 and 14 lays out the gospel in a simple format that leaves no room for confusion. Let’s dig in and see how.
He has rescued us. We are saved from damnation or eternal separation from Him. It is not something we have done ourselves or can do. It is because of His actions that we are saved. His death on the cross paid the price for your sin and mine. It paid for the sins of everyone. Whether people choose to accept that sacrifice as payment for their sins is a different matter. He died for everyone, but not everyone will accept Him as their Lord. The debt is paid, regardless.
Rescue was from the dominions of darkness. What is that, you ask? In religious terms, this is the realm of evil. It is always associated with sin, wickedness, darkness, as well as Satan and his demons. This is contrasted with the Kingdom of the Son He loves. We know this is talking about Jesus since it is referencing the Son He loves. By His power we are transferred from darkness to light, from wickedness to holiness, from the dominions of darkness to the Kingdom of Light.
All of this is done thanks to Christ’s death on the cross. Our future has been transformed – from death to life and from separation to fellowship, all through the sacrifice Christ made in our place. His sacrificial love redeemed us and did what was impossible for us to do on our own. We have been rescued! Our sins have been forgiven.
