Colossians 1:13-14 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Spiritual darkness is the state of being disconnected from God’s truth and His righteousness. It is a prison that holds us captive in the absence of His presence and love. Darkness can be said to symbolize a lack of wisdom and a life of moral failure. And without Him, it eternally separates us from the love of God – not a place we want to be. In the Bible, light and darkness often are used to represent sin and truth. We do not want to be living in sin. We want to live in truth.
Paul shows us that we have been rescued from this darkness and transferred into the kingdom of light, the kingdom of His Son. Before we encountered Jesus, we were captives of darkness. But through the relationship we have with Him we have redemption. We have our sins forgiven. We experience a transformation in our lives and have a new identity, one that is rooted in Him, one that is founded upon His truth and light.
Yesterday we learned that Jesus is the truth and the truth is what sets us free. Today we again see that it is through Him, through our faith in Jesus, that we are redeemed and brought into His kingdom. Redemption, the purchase of freedom from slavery to sin by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, is ours through His grace and mercy.
To enter into the kingdom of Jesus, we need to acknowledge our sinful nature and face the consequences for our sin. We are not righteous (Romans 3:11-12) and have no power to change this ourselves. If we were to stand before God without a faith in Jesus, we would be judged and cast out (1 Thessalonians 1:9). Nothing unrighteous can be in His presence (Revelation 21:27). But through Jesus, we are set free, we are transformed, and we become righteous.
We have no need to fear death and eternal separation from God any longer. Put your faith in Him and be freed from the darkness so that you may walk in the Light.
