Devotion: Colossians 1:16

Sept. 30, 2025

Colossians 1:16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

We mentioned yesterday that God is the master Creator of everything,  and today we revisit that fact. But today we focus on Christ and the authority He has over everything. We know we are talking about Christ in this verse after having read the surrounding verses for context. This letter, written by the Apostle Paul, was sent to the Colossians because they were hearing a lot of misleading information. False teachers were promoting the worship of unseen things and angels rather than Christ. In doing this, they were undermining the supremacy of Christ.

Everything, seen or unseen, has one purpose – to glorify God. Christ was with God in the beginning when everything was being created (John 1:1) and He sustains our lives. He is not a created being, but a person in the Trinity. He created everything we see and everything that we don’t see. He even established the authorities and leaders that we see around the world and in our own workplaces and schools. They may not be living godly lives, but they are doing the job they were given to do, orchestrated by God. We have many stories in the Old Testament that show God using the non-believers to bring glory to His Name.

Trust that you are on the path God has created and laid out for you. And if you feel you have strayed from that path, turn back and get to where you need to be. Read your Bible, pray, go to church, get involved and serve. And know that when you were off the path it didn’t disqualify you for His grace and blessings. Instead it glorified Him, because you turned back (repented) and are seeking His will and purpose in your life. God can and does use all things for His glory (2 Corinthians 4:15).

Let your actions glorify Him today. Be a light shining in the darkness (Matthew 5:16) and live a life that is holy and righteous. Live a life of purpose, seek God’s will for your life, and trust that He has an amazing plan for you (Jeremiah 29:11).
