Devotion: Colossians 3:20

Jan 27, 2026

Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

Being a parent myself, this is a verse my kids are familiar with.  But I was first a daughter and sister with parents of my own that did their best to raise us in a godly home. And though I’m an adult now with kids of my own, I still remain a daughter. And I am a daughter of the King. So obedience and respect to parents is important in my life and I pray it is important to your own.

As children we are taught to respect our elders. In some homes they also teach fear but honor and obedience are choices we make, not emotional responses we have. Paul reminded children from Colossae to obey their parents in everything. But let me amend that command with a slight edit – everything that obeys God’s Word. Willfully choosing to obey our parents when it is contrary to God’s Word is not something we should do. And I pray that is not the case but it was worth mentioning regardless.

Paul said to obey our parents in everything and then told us why. Obedience to our parents is pleasing to our Father. Our actions allow us to honor, respect, and obey our earthly parents, which He delights in.  And it allows us to grow, to learn, and to become the people we will someday become.

Granted not every believer was raised or is being raised in a Godly home, but we are still meant to honor and obey. As believers living in worldly homes, it is our lives being lived in humble obedience that become witnesses to non believing parents. Your walk is a testimony to your family and can show them the love of Christ.

Regardless of how you were raised, we are all children of the Lord and must be obedient to Him first. Obedience to our earthy families teaches us how to listen and do as we are told. And that is so much more important when listening to our heavenly Father and obeying His Word.

Take a few minutes today to tell your parents thank you for teaching you obedience. And be gracious with your own children and remember you are still shaping those lives. But first thank God for all He has given you in your life. He loves you and wants to hear from you.

Prayer: Lord, Thank you for my parents and all I learned from them. Let me be obedient to them and to You. Amen
