1 Corinthians 16:13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.
Paul’s writing style is evident in this passage of Scripture. He has a style that often includes lists of commands, usually found near the ends of his epistles as he is wrapping things up. That is the case for today’s verse. We find four short commands that we can spend a great amount of time discussing, but for the sake of time will address minimally today.
Be on your guard – This means the Christian should be watchful. Danger, trials, struggles, persecution or attack, or simply temptations are all things the believer should be watching for. Pray for God to reveal these things to you so that you would not stumble.
Stand firm in the faith – We have been talking about this all month. We are to stand firm in what we believe, living for Him, doing His will and not our own. We are to stay committed to our beliefs and stay strong in our convictions.
Be courageous – Regardless of the translation you have in your bible (some say to act like a man, others to be courageous), the command is simple – be brave and resolute when you face challenges. There is no reason for us to fear because we have God with us, standing strong with us and over us. We can rely on Him as we stand courageously.
And finally, be strong – We are to stand with strength in our faith. We are strong because He makes us so. When we are weak, He is strong. Let His strength fill you and hold you steadfast in your convictions.
I pray that today’s verse gives you the confidence you need to stand firm in your faith. Let Paul’s words fill you and encourage your walk, and trust in God to be there alongside your every step.
