Daniel 2:20 …and said: “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His.”
Today’s verse comes after God has granted Daniel the ability to interpret King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. He immediately responds with praise to God for revealing it to him. He recognized that this dream was interpreted by God’s power, not his own.
He starts his praise with a doxology, which is a short hymn of worship. Similar to many of the psalms, we see him acknowledging God and His authority and His role in their world. He demonstrates reverence to God for His holiness and worships Him in gratitude for the revelation He received.
Daniel recognized two great attributes of God in this passage. He said, “…wisdom and power are His.” These attributes are His alone. We seek them ourselves, but He alone possesses them with no limitations. Wisdom, as it is used in the Bible, is the application of knowledge. Knowledge by itself is nothing but factual information. True wisdom takes that knowledge and uses it to do God’s will (Proverbs 2:5). God is also all powerful and omnipotent. In His great wisdom, He executes His plan for His glory. In this case, it was done through dream interpretation.
Daniel serves as an example to us. He modeled the response we should have at God’s revelations in our lives. We should be cultivating a habit of praise and worship when He reveals His wisdom and power to us. It also shows us that we should be depending on God for direction in our pursuits. Daniel demonstrated a deep faith in God and an understanding of His nature, something we should be trying to do, too.
When we praise God for His direction in our lives, we become a living testimony to those around us. Just as Daniel was a witness to the King and his prophets, our lives can be used to lead others to Him.
