Deuteronomy 8:6 Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.
At this point in the story of the Israelites journey, they had already been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years and were finally taking the lands the Lord had promised them. The book of Deuteronomy is a farewell message from Moses who was not allowed to enter the Promised Lands himself. It served as a reminder of all the Lord had commanded of them. In it, Moses also recounts the history of the previous generation’s failure in the wilderness, putting an emphasis on God’s grace and their need for obedience.
In today’s verse, we see that we are called to be obedient as we walk in His ways. We are reminded to show reverence to Him, not out of duty, but in response to the provisions He gives us. Our obedience can be looked at in three parts here – observing the commands, walking in obedience, and reverence. When we employ all three areas we know we are actively living a life of obedience to Him.
We are called to obedience. For the Israelites it was obedience to the Law that Moses gave them from God. But for us we walk in obedience to Christ who saved us from our sins. We are made new creations, washed by the blood, but we still have human minds and will power. We find ourselves needing to choose to be obedient or to walk in the ways of the world. And our choice reflects our heart posture.
Are we walking with Him out of love and reverence? Or are we choosing to do what WE want to do instead? Ponder that as you go about your day.
Prayer: Lord, Help me to walk in obedience to Your will for my life. I don’t want to walk in the ways of the world. I long to be close, with You walking by my side. Amen
