Devotion: Ecclesiastes 12:13

Sept. 22, 2025

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.

The book of Ecclesiastes is an interesting read if you have some time to spare. It is considered one of the wisdom books and is often attributed to King Solomon, though that is speculation. Regardless of who wrote it, at this point in the book we reach a conclusion. The teacher has experienced all there is to experience, has lived a rich life, and has drawn one final conclusion from it all.

Fear God and keep His commandments.

The reference to fear the Lord is not saying we should be afraid of God and that we are timid in His great and glorious presence. Instead it is referring to our heart posture. We show respect and awe of God. We recognize His greatness and His power. And we give Him the honor and praise He deserves,

The reference to keep His commandments is simple enough to understand. We are to be obedient to His divine laws and instructions. We are to follow His commandments and do what He has put in our path to do.

Doing both of these we find purpose in our lives. When we follow Him and are obedient to His instructions, we give Him honor and glory. We fulfill our life’s purpose by obeying His divine commands and laws. And we are rewarded for our obedience.

Are you fearing God and keeping His commandments? If no, why not?

If yes, what can you do to grow further? That should always be our goal – to continue growing and developing in our Christian walk. Evaluate your walk today and think of new ways to be obedient and respectful.
