Devotion: Ephesians 1:17

September 12, 2024

Ephesians 1:17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

Some have argued that the Trinity that many denominations believe in and preach is never mentioned in the Bible. This is true, but also not true. The term itself is never used. That is correct. But the concept of a triune God is, and this verse is one I often use the support that view.

In this verse, Paul differentiates between the God of our Lord Jesus who He calls the glorious Father. He identifies the Father separate from the Son. He then refers to the Father giving us the Spirit. Though it is not called the Holy Spirit, the reference in various translations all capitalize Spirit showing that it was commonly believed by all who translated it from the original language to be the Holy Spirit. Thus we see God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Paul prays that the Father would give us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. The purpose was for us to know Him better. And I don’t know about you but that is something I pray for daily. I want to better know God and to live for Him. But I need to know what He wants for my life to better know Him and enter into His Presence, which requires wisdom and discernment. Lucky for us, the Father gives us the Spirit who reveals this to us through knowledge and revelation. Remember, we said wisdom is something we have, not something we do, so we gain knowledge and the truth is revealed to us which grants us wisdom overall.

Sadly, we can never fully know Him. Our knowledge and wisdom can grow (Ephesians 4:15, 1 Peter 2;2), and hopefully it does grow more and more each day. But we are finite beings and God is infinite. We can never truly know Him in all of His glory, at least not until we see Him in heaven. The only way we can even begin to understand Him is through the help of the Spirit.

Are you letting the Spirit reveal Him to you? It is my prayer, like that of Paul, that He be revealed to you in new ways each day through the Spirit.
