Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
This is one of the first verses I remember memorizing that has stuck with me all these years. It is one of the first that truly made me understand that I did nothing myself to bring about my salvation. It was only Him and Him only that saved me, nothing of me.
And it is a verse we have cited many times this month in other devotions because it is such a foundational truth that we need to understand. It is by GRACE that we have been saved, through the faith we have in Jesus and the sacrifice He made for us. It is faith that allows us to believe that we are forgiven for those sins we have committed and His grace that gives us forgiveness.
And none of us has any right to boast because we did nothing ourselves. We are the recipients of this grace, of salvation and forgiveness, and nothing we ever did or can ever do would come close to being worthy of what He did for us. Any works we have now, after being saved, are a result of the grace we received by faith, a natural response to the gratitude and awe within us to give back to the One who gave so much for us.
It is a gift of God, pure and simple in its form. A gift of grace that we are totally and wholly undeserving of, a gift we did nothing to earn. Take some time today to thank Him for the grace He has given you in your life, for the person He has saved you from becoming.
