Ephesians 5:20 Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Today’s verse is a great reminder that we are to ALWAYS be giving thanks to God. Yesterday we said we enter His presence with thanksgiving and praise, regardless of the circumstances in our lives, and today we see that in everything we do, we should always be giving thanks to God for EVERYTHING.
When we choose to give thanks in everything, we develop a consistent attitude of gratitude. That gratitude should be present in both positive and negative circumstances, no matter how we feel. We choose to give thanks and we give them with our whole heart. Sometimes it is hard to do that. Some days we just don’t feel thankful and life just seems to be beating us down. But we CHOOSE to acknowledge His goodness and provision for our lives.
When we are always giving thanks we exhibit a constant response to God’s sovereignty, grace, and redemptive work. We recognize Him as the Master of our lives and the Lover of our souls. We see Him as a giving, generous Father who loves us and wants us to have the best of things (Philippians 4;19).
Our thanks include His blessings in our lives, both large and small. We acknowledge His provision in everything. But it also includes the trials, troubles, and afflictions we experience, which is difficult to be thankful for. We have a belief that God is working all things for good and that He has a purpose for what we are going through (Romans 8:28). Every test and trial helps shape us and forms our testimony.
Pause and take some time right now to pray and talk to God about what is going on in your life. Thank Him for what you are experiencing, whether good or bad, and trust that He has a plan and it will work out for your good (Jeremiah 29:11).
