Devotion: Ephesians 6:10

March 30, 2025

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

Today’s verse wraps up what Paul had been teaching the Ephesians and leads into his discussion on the Armor of God that we are to equip ourselves with. It is a short sentence, but a great reminder for the believer. Our strength does not come from us but rather, from God.

The term “be strong” in the NIV is translated as “be strengthened” in other versions. This strengthening is necessary for us to be prepared for the spiritual battles we will face (Ephesians 6:12-13). We rely on God, not ourselves when fighting against the darkness. It is His might that brings about victory, not something we do on our own, and it comes from being strengthened or growing strong in Him. We cannot strengthen ourselves. It comes from Him, which means we need to be seeking Him and trusting in Him to work in us and through us.

We also see that it says IN the Lord, not by the Lord or with the Lord or any other rendering. We are strong IN the Lord, united with Him, one with Him. In John 15:4-5 we get a better idea of what it means to be in the Lord. Apart from Him, we can do nothing. And that includes being strong. We are strong because He is strong and it is in Him that our strength is born.

Look to the Lord for strength and His mighty power. Know that it is nothing we do on our own, but it is Christ in us that overcomes. Surrender all you are to Him and give Him complete control of your life. It is then that we are strengthened and we can put on the full armor of God and endure the spiritual warfare going on around us.
